assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,
this is specifically directed to brother haitham,
i find it hard to understand why some communities here in the US will have eid on saturday. i always understood that we go by whoever sights the moon first, and that this is not restricted to any country in particular. so we have this division each year to the point that in the same community (two masaajid 10 miles distance) are having eid on diferent days.
so what is the correct stance on this issue?

i always understood that we go by whoever sights the moon first, and that this is not restricted to any country in particular.
There is a second opinion on this issue: each province is to go by their local moon sighting. This is the opinion of the Malik's, Shafi's and many contemporary Hanbalis and Hanafis.
so we have this division each year to the point that in the same community (two masaajid 10 miles distance) are having eid on diferent days.
This should not be. The masajid in the same locality should meet and unify their method of determining what to go by.
so what is the correct stance on this issue?
The correct position is that you go by the Masjid which you are a part of. You have to obey their leadership in the position which they choose.
Now let's stop talking about division and enjoy these wonderful days :)

Assalaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,
My intention was not to talk about the division, and alhamdulillah I do go by my local community and submit to their leadership.
I merely asked a question since a friend of mine is the one who lives in the community that is divided on this issue and she sought answers from me on what she should do -go with those who have it on friday or with those who have it on saturday. So I posted my question with a brief description of reason for confusion in hopes to seek knowledge and advise her accordingly.
We know that this should not be the case in one and the same community, but that is not what the question was.It is good for those of us who do not know to ask those who do know and acquire evidences of both opinions so that we can be better prepared next year insha'allah.
Eid mubarak
