  • Three Imams in One Isnad

Ibn Kathir said in 'Tafsir al-Qur'an al-'Adhim' (2/142):

"...And we reported from the 'Musnad' of Ahmad a hadith that has a glad tiding for every believer that his soul will be in Paradise and will also move around in it, will eat from its fruits, will see the brightness and happiness in it, and will see the honor that Allah has prepared for it, and it is a mighty, great, authentic isnad that contains three of the four scholars of the followed madhahib, as al-Imam Ahmad narrated it from Muhammad bin Idris ash-Shafi'i from Malik bin Anas al-Asbahi from az-Zuhri from 'Abd ar-Rahman in Ka'b bin Malik from his father who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "The soul of the believer is a bird hanging from a tree in Paradise until Allah returns it to his body on the day He resurrects him.""

And here are a few more narrations that have Ahmad narrating from ash-Shafi'i narrating from Malik (known as 'the Golden Chain'):

Jazaakallaah brother for bringing such a unique point about the Hadith sciences. Definitely a worth read.

And as usual, this has added some questions to my 'question hell", such as, An overview of hadith with chains containing Hadith Imaams in similar fashion ? (Ahmad Bukhari Muslim etc). There are (may be) few occasions where Tirmizhee brings a Hadith from Bukhari. I am not sure if tirmizhee actually heard from Bukhari or read from a written form? Also Muslim is said to contain one hadith (may be more) narrated by Bukhari? and so on

    Allaah knows best.

Not quite what you are looking for but Sheikh Ahmed Shakir has some related research in al Ba'ith al Hathih Sharh Ikhtisar 'Ulum al Hadith (Maktaba al Ma’arif: 1996 ed.) where on pp.101-105 he comments on the most authentic isnads according to various scholars and also lists the most authentic isnads from each of seventeen Companions (Allah be well pleased with them all). For example, the most authentic isnad according to al Bukhari is Imam Malik from Nafi' from Ibn 'Umar (which appears numerous times in al Muwatta). He also writes that the most authentic isnad from Abu Bakr (Allah be well pleased with him) is Isma'l b. Abi Khalid from Qays b. Abi Hazim from Abu Bakr (which appears in al Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud among other hadith collections).

There are (may be) few occasions where Tirmizhee brings a Hadith from Bukhari. I am not sure if tirmizhee actually heard from Bukhari or read from a written form?
Certainly, al Tirmidhi questioned Bukhari about the authenticity of various hadith. He says in a number of places in his Sunan: "I asked Muhammad (i.e. al Bukhari) about this..." or "I heard Muhammad say..."

Also Muslim is said to contain one hadith (may be more) narrated by Bukhari? and so on
I'm not sure if Muslim in his Sahih related any hadith directly from Bukhari, and Allah knows best. If he didn't it wouldn't be that surprising because they were contemporaries and no doubt Muslim met and knew many of the same shaykhs that Bukhari did and so was able to narrate from them directly without needing to cite Bukhari as an intermediary. This way he could guarantee a shorter isnad.

      And Allah knows best.

Bismillah,Al Imam Dhahabi[rh]said,Al Imam Muslim[rh] did not mention a single hadeeth from Al Bukhaari, nor did he mention him in his Saheeh. In fact,he began his book by criticizing those who stipulate that a narrator be known to have met anyone whom he narrates from using the expression 'an' [Tareekh Madinah Dimashq 22/341]
The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said:
Verily,Allaah veils the tawbah from every innovator until he leaves his innovation'' [As Sunnah#37 and Shaykh Al Albaani رحمه الله said, Saheeh ]
Shaykh al Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله commented,'' This indicates that the innovator will not repent from his Bid'ah,because he thinks that he is rightly guided.''
